Overview
VCarve Pro provides a powerful but intuitive software solution for cutting parts on a CNC Router. There are tools for 2D design and calculation of 2D and 2.5D toolpaths and along with the ability to import and toolpath a single 3D model (STL, OBJ, SKP etc.). There is also support to import multiple Vectric Clip Art 3D models (V3M) to create advanced 3D assemblies.

http://www.vectric.com/products/vcarve.htm

Vectric VCarve Pro is installed at the makerspace on the following computers:
*3D printing (x3, Front Room)
*CNC Router (x1, Wood Shop)
*Laser Cutter (x1, Back Workshop)

How does the Makerspace Program work?
The Makerspace can install the specially licensed software on up to 5 PC’s, these MUST be connected to the internet. When a member opens a file which they have been working within a Makerspace Client Edition of the software on their own computer, VCarve Pro Maker Edition will contact a web server run by Vectric to get permission to open the file. When permission is received, the file will open as though it was written by any normal version of VCarve Pro; from there they will be able to save their toolpaths to run on the CNC at the Makerspace.
To obtain a Makerspace Client Edition a member just needs to download the free Trial Edition of VCarve Pro and activate it with a MakerspaceID code that can be generated from the Makerspace Edition installed at the main facility. Full details of this are available in the PDF document downloadable by clicking the button below.

https://www.vectric.com/free-trial/vcarve-pro

We are currently using VCarve Pro v10

Idea: make a robot which uses one or more metal search-coils to look for metallic objects in beach sand. Make it look like something that has crawled out of the water! The idea was sparked from a project seen on the web where a person made a metal detector with five tiny coils that would light an LED above the coil when it detected a metal object in its field. The coils were arranged in a horseshoe shape on the end of a mop handle.

In the spirit of using multiple coils; an idea of arranging the coils in an overlapping pattern and placing them on an autonomous robot frame came about. The purpose was to free up the user and effectively cover large areas of terrain by following preset patterns while searching for metal objects. When it detects something, a marker (clay poker chip) would be dispensed and the user could then follow the machine and pinpoint the object more effectively than covering the same area on foot.

The frame is made from a golf caddy with one drive motor per front wheel for propulsion and a third free-rotating trailing rear wheel. This creates a tricycle configuration with the coil setup across the front two wheels and the back wheel protruding like the tail of a horseshoe crab. Hence the name.

It will be controlled using a simple arduino setup and a motor shield to drive the front wheels. The poker chips will also be dispensed based on when an object is detected by the coils and arduino driven as well. The board will also have control over object detection to stop the device if someone walks in its path.

Other potential options can include WiFi or Bluetooth control with a tablet, solar panels for power, a fanciful light weight carapace to match the crab motif, and even flashing lights to warn pedestrians of it's approach.

At present, the frame and most of the project parts are ready to go together and the required programming is the next big hurdle. If you have arduino program skills and would like to participate in this project please find me at the space and we can make this happen.

*Vectric limits the saving of the gcode toolpaths to fully-licensed computers at the Makerspace (of which we get 5 seats, one of which is the CNC control computer) as the final step in their software. The only step after that is loading the gcode txt file into the CNC control software (Mach3) and running the machine. The post processor in Vectric will be "Mach2/3 Arcs (mm)." This is a video that covers some fitment details (like if you were cutting the rosette pocket to fit an existing rosette ring). Normally this is done with "cutter compensation" in other CAM software but Vectric doesn't do it that way. There is an "allowance" setting in the profile & pocket toolpaths that you have to adjust and repost the gcode for tweaking just the right fit. It might be useful for you.

We are currently using VCarve Pro v9.
This is how a tap and aluminium blank are set up for the cutting of the worm wheel. The blank (not shown here) is center drilled to 10 mm to fit the toolpost and held down during the cutting. The blank's diameter is calculated to give the required number of teeth. As the tap slowly turns it advances the blank while cutting the teeth. At each revolution the crossfeed is advance a few thousandths of an inch until the desired tooth depth is reached.

This shows a blank in place with a finer pitch tap (1/4-20). The dead center is not used on such small taps.
